Johnny and I celebrated our 25th anniversary at Astoria, 4/26/2025. What a wonderful experience! We started with an appetizer of Saganaki. Johnny chose the Chicken and Duck with jambalaya. It was so tasty. The duck was especially good as it had a crispy crust, but was juicy and very flavorful inside. I chose the Beef Short-rib étouffée. Probably the best short-ribs I've ever had. They were served with rice and asparagus. I can only say the étouffée sauce was incredible. As always the staff was wonderful. The restaurant is comfortable even when crowded (which on weekends it usually is). I advise reservations especially on weekends. Astoria is definitely one of the treasures of the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood!

Amazing service and unique flavorful food! We really enjoyed all the options and flavors of this menu. It's a great place for groups and casual hangouts! Our waiters and waitresses were super friendly and explained all the meats on the charcuterie board and brought more bread every time we were close to running out. Would love to come back and try the cheese boards.

Greeted by warm smiles and seated without a reservation on a Sunday brunch afternoon, timing was perfect! There were only 2 open tables! We were given server, Brandy and other than the cocktail, she was the best! Her raspy voice and charming personality were both inviting as she walked us thru the menu, which was paring down as orders plowed into the kitchen! We enjoyed two all-time house favs... i thoroughly enjoyed the big dawg, Croque Madame and i can't tell you what was better, the ham Sammie inside or the rich bechamel-drenched Sunnyside egg on the outside... it's a tie! It was served with a highly dressed mixed greens, just so you can think you aren't eating a zillion calories! I could only eat 1/2 but the other 1/2 was just as good the next day, deconstructed! Mom had the Astoria breakfast and because they were out of the Lang's sausage, they gave her double bacon... i swear it was 1/2 lbs! The petite taters were delicately crisp but be careful of the Calabria chiles... the heat ain't no joke! It's a drive for us, but well worth it! Just ignore the fact that you are eating in a deli!!!! (Spolier alert) Check out my pics...i wish I had smellavision or scratch and taste!

What a cute market and restaurant! They also have their own private parking lot. Great service and drinks that were fast and friendly. The small plates are my favorite but try what you like. With your receipt at the end of a meal you get a discount from the little deli shop!

Astoria is a fun place for brunch that I've been told is a good place to meet your friends from the far side of town. I'd definitely recommend reservations. The dining area is on the small side and there was a pretty big line when we left. That being said, the staff were really friendly, service was great, and I've been dreaming of that fried chicken. We had the full brunch beverage array - water, coffee, and a fun drink. The menu isn't huge, but everything looked good, and there are some intriguing boards I'd like to sample. I had the chicken and biscuit, and the chicken was fantastic. I'm sure the biscuit was good, too, but I was pretty honed in on the chicken. The skin SNAPS when you bite it! So good! The food was well seasoned, and the staff were really nice about letting us take our time, even on a busy day.

I visited for the first time towards the end of January 2024 after viewing the new apartments across the street. They have a small market that is attached to the restaurant so you can shop for some Italian spices, sauces, snacks, wine, etc PIZZAS -- Their pizzas are probably one of the best that I've had in Cleveland. Soft and rich. Flavourful. I ordered the Pizza Margherita ($15 during happy hour time) which consists of herb-roasted tomatoes , fresh mozzarella cheese, and basil with a garlic sauce. This pizza is soooo flavourful and just perfect. No meat is even needed. Normally, I don't like to eat cheese neither do I really like sole cheeses or I hardly eat cheese but the mozzarella cheese in this pizza did not make my stomach hurt and it tasted fresh. Earlier this morning, I came across my photo of the margherita pizza and I'm craving to order it tonight - that's how delicious it is. I recently had a dry and hard pizza from a pizza restaurant in Lakewood but Astoria Cafe has one of the best pizzas in the city of Cleveland. I also tried their pepperoni and mushroom pizza and those were really. I also ordered the Chicken Avgolemono Soup ($7) as a starter before the pizzas arrived and this was a nice soup but it needed some more flavour besides salt. I'll definitely be back to Astoria Cafe to try other menu items and to buy the Biscotello cookies from their small market. **** GOAL of 150 reviews in 2024 - 10/150 total reviews in 2024 - 660 total overall Yelp reviews - Reviewed on Friday, 15 March 2024

Astoria Cafe & Market

Astoria Cafe & Market is the kind of neighborhood gem that draws you in with its welcoming vibe and keeps you coming back with its unforgettable flavors. Tucked in at 5417 Detroit Ave, Cleveland, this spot is more than just a cafe—it’s an experience for anyone craving something vibrant and locally rooted.

Where Mediterranean flavors meet modern Cleveland

Walking into Astoria Cafe & Market, you’re instantly greeted by the inviting aroma of roasted olives, baked feta, and freshly sliced prosciutto. The space buzzes with conversation and clinks of glasses as diners gather for brunch, dinner, or a relaxed midday wine tasting. It’s one of those places where the vibe mirrors the plate: lively, honest, and full of character. Whether you’re here for a simple charcuterie board or a full-on Mediterranean feast, Astoria delivers bold, curated dishes with care.

It’s easy to understand why food lovers search for Mediterranean restaurants in Cleveland and end up here. The menu spans Greek, Italian, and Middle Eastern staples, but never feels overwhelming. Dishes like grilled octopus, braised lamb shank, and the signature meze platter make it clear that the kitchen knows its craft. It’s the kind of meal you remember—not because it’s flashy, but because it’s done right.

A curated experience of food and market under one roof

Astoria isn’t just a sit-down restaurant—it’s also a boutique market packed with imported ingredients, fine wines, and local finds. After your meal, it’s common to see guests perusing shelves lined with Greek olive oil, artisan cheeses, and preserved lemons. There’s a quiet thrill in picking out ingredients that were just featured in your dish. That dual experience—dining and shopping—feels intentional, as if Astoria wants you to take a little bit of their kitchen home with you.

The service rounds out the experience. Staff here strike a balance between laid-back and deeply informed. Need a wine pairing for your lamb? They’ll recommend a bold Syrah from Macedonia. Not sure what’s in the baba ganoush? They’ll break it down, explaining how the eggplant is fire-roasted and whipped with tahini until smooth. It’s the kind of detail that builds trust and keeps the experience elevated.

A local favorite shaped by community and care

Located in the heart of Detroit Shoreway, Astoria thrives because it understands its neighborhood. The exposed brick walls, warm lighting, and communal tables speak to Cleveland’s working-class roots with a touch of European elegance. On weekends, it’s buzzing with brunch-goers digging into shakshuka and lemon ricotta pancakes. On weekday evenings, you’ll find professionals unwinding over tapas and small plates. The crowd is a mix: couples, families, solo diners—all drawn by the consistency and comfort that Astoria offers.

It’s no surprise the place has racked up glowing reviews on platforms like Google, Yelp, and TripAdvisor. But the real endorsement comes from locals who name-drop it when someone asks where to eat in Cleveland. It’s that dependable. That good. You hear phrases like “hidden gem,” “date-night favorite,” “best brunch in town”, and for once, they’re not exaggerating.

More than a meal—it’s a destination worth the drive

What sets Astoria apart is how seamlessly it blends dining, discovery, and community. It doesn’t rely on gimmicks or trends. Instead, it leans into authenticity—of flavors, of service, and of experience. Whether you’re swinging by for an espresso and pastry or settling in for a multi-course dinner, Astoria finds a way to feel both relaxed and special.

If you're in Cleveland and searching for a spot that balances Mediterranean charm with Midwestern heart, Astoria Cafe & Market delivers. No flashy signs. No corporate feel. Just great food, thoughtful service, and a place that feels a little like home.
